Critter Corner

At Provo Turtle Divers we do not offer shark dives nor do we feed fish, so everything you see when you dive with us is natural, as it actually exists in the wild.

We never guarantee that you will see anything bigger than your head! We will guarantee that you will see lots of tropical fish and healthy corals and sponges as well as the big critters like sharks, eagle rays and whales. Unlike some destinations where the divemasters can take you to see 'Gertie' the green moray, we don't have a resident. We do see them, but not on a regular basis. However, for every 1 green moray there are 3 or 4 spotted and golden-tail morays, if you have sharp eyes!

Provo Turtle Divers is an official REEF station, and encourages all divers to take part in our fish surveys. And, of course, we offer a Fish ID course which will put you on a first name basis with at least 30 fish!

WHALE SIGHTINGS! Whales, whales and more whales! 2008 was a fantastic year for whale sightings. We started seeing them before Christmas and saw them consistently through January and February.  We didn't see so many in March but they were still around.  Most of our sightings and encounters were at NW Point. The second week in April we saw a calf on it's own. Mom was probably not too far away - but that was our last sighting of 2008.

2007 - A young whale was spotted on January 13th just off the point at NW Point while we were returning from our 2 dives.  We stopped and the whale approached us for a few photographic poses.  We've seen spouts of water off in the distance around NW Point.

2006 -Just before Christmas 2006 and had had several exciting encounters with them during 2007.  Whales were seen through the month of April. In July there were some pilot whales spotted for several days off the Grace Bay area.

2005 -We saw our first Humpback Whales on Dec. 23, 2005 at Sandbore Channel - 2 adult males - the last sighting was April 22, 2006 - the longest they've been around that anyone can remember - until next year - they've all gone back up north to cooler waters.

Current Water Temperature: as of May 9th 2008
