The S.T.A.R.S. Program

The STARS International (Scuba Training At-Risk Students) program was modeled after two years of field-tested pilot programs in the greater Chicago, Illinois area in 2005 and 2006. STARS International is focused solely on at-risk youth (ages 13-17) with the goal to provide a positive diversionary activity incorporating scuba diving which reinforces and supports local academic achievement and career development. Candidates must be predetermined to exude traits qualifying them as “at-risk” teens and be nominated by local or civic authority figure.

STARS International encompasses an eighteen month curriculum spanning two academic years. The first 12 months of the program target development of the candidate’s diving skills and interests, whereas the subsequent 6 months leverage participant’s confidence and leadership skills to assist development of new candidates.

The Scuba certifications attainable through this program are enhanced courses designed by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). PADI is the world’s largest recreational diving organization. The PADI system of diver education is based upon progressive training that introduces skills, safety related information and local environmental knowledge in steps ranging from entry level through Scuba Instructor. The STARS International curriculum encompasses studies from entry level through PADI Rescue Diver, and it includes 3 diving specialties (Search & Recovery, SeaSigns Underwater communications and Underwater Photography). All PADI programs fall under strict educational standards to maintain worldwide consistency and quality.

Although the STARS program models an academic classroom, participants are held to higher standards than traditional schools, demanding high energy levels with firm expectations that are required to sustain their involvement. The participant’s inner commitment and self motivation as well as parent/guardian’s support is necessary to chart their new course to a positive life strategy. The participant’s physical endurance level and personal energy limit will be stretched and tested every week of this unique program.

Every summer, Provo Turtle Divers teams up with STARS for their open water dives. This year we have included Clement Howell High School students for local kids participation.
